New Toy?

I'm debating whether or not to get a kindle.

I know, I know. I love the smell and feel of REAL books as well. But at the rate I go through a book (i.e. really, really, really quickly) I can't help but feel that a kindle would make my bags MUCH lighter, especially when I travel. It's batteries even supports ONE MONTH of reading without charging! How cool is that?

Then there's a part of me (the idealistic, old school part) which feels like I'd be selling out and betraying the soul of books if I started reading electronically.

Then again, there's another part of me which also feels like a Kindle would be a much more environmentally friendly option instead of the trees I'm contributing to killing when I buy a 932 page book (like Shantaram that I'm reading now).

Decisions, decisions...

*Ipad et all not an option. I want to read, not act cool :p

  1. hi there! i read your blog from time to time, and it's my first time to comment. as an avid reader, i'd say get the kindle! i also had the same considerations as you do, that is, am i foregoing the look and feel of traditional books when i buy electronic books? but my practical need for space, weight, and convenience won over and i bought the kindle. i go the wifi version and a leather cover with lights, i must say i find it much more useful than buying a smart phone. also, you can download pdf files if you can't find kindle files of the book you want, plus, i just discovered that some Chinese books are in kindle version, so I can still read Chinese texts albeit in limited choices.

  3. Great minds think alike, Heather :P I've been dying to get a Kindle for a while and I'm probably take the plunge pretty soon. I've got the Kindle app on my iPhone. The only downside is it's way too easy to buy books. I just bought 20 this month. Yup. Crazy, I know but it solves the problem of having to ship tons of books each time we move.

  4. CCC, I took the plunge. BUT! Just realised the multitude of complications cos I live in Luxembourg. Can only buy ebooks from Amazon.com and not amazon.co.uk, and the books available for customers Europe are approx 50% more expensive than customers in UK or US.
